Community Altar

Día de los Muertos Community Altar at Your Library

English/Inglés  Spanish/Español

The White Oak Library District, the Stanford Latino Alumni Association, Chicago Chapter, and REFORMA have partnered to create a Community Altar at the Crest Hill Branch Library to commemorate the cultural significance of el Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which originated in Mexico, and today is celebrated worldwide.

We are asking for community donations to successfully present this initiative. Donations will make a difference by helping us prepare a culturally accurate altar. The goal is to bring our community together to celebrate and honor all heritages within our rich, multicultural society.

In 2022, we received the REFORMA National Grant “[...] for library projects or programs for children, young adults, or adults that furthers the mission of REFORMA National.” REFORMA is The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking.

El Día de los Muertos spans November 1st and 2nd each year, and is a joyful celebration rather than one of mourning that includes praying for, and remembering, friends and family who have passed. An altar is a raised place on which food, goods, and gifts are offered to loved ones who have passed. This holiday is associated with the Catholic holidays All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.
